Well have you been to see  Avatar the highest grossing movie to date? Did you see it in 3D? I did and to be honest it was impressive on the effects side and the acting was of a high standard, but if ‘stay in your memory’ and ‘talk about it afterwards’ were important factors to base an evaluation on then it lacked something.

Pocahontas in space best describes the plot and there was a very clear eco warrior vibe going on. Throw in some outlandish creatures and amazing colours, season with a dash of corporate greed (ala Aliens) and cook for a couple of hours.

As a teaching resource it raises some very interesting questions about resources, colonisation, race, greed and even loyalty. There’s even a moral dilemma for one of the main characters when offered an unbelievable opportunity if he spies on the locals whilst interacting with them. Not to mention the whole issue of the avatar of the title and living in an imaginary world – we call that gaming!

Pro: Spectacular effects

Con: Didn’t enjoy the 3D experience

Rating: 7/10
